"If we can't do it safely, we do not do it at all" - Borealis & safe driving training

Borealis is one of the world's leading suppliers of advanced and sustainable polyolefin solutions and is a European pioneer in polyolefin recycling. The company has a long tradition at the Porvoo location of providing safe driving training for company drivers and others who drive a lot for their work.

In accordance with group-wide requirements, target group members must complete a safe driving course at least every three years. However, Borealis wanted to make things a little better in Finland: together with Excelsior's Ari Parkkonen, we designed a concept in which training is offered every two years in such a way that the courses differ from each other in terms of implementation. In connection with the commissioning of a new car, motorists are invited to a driving event personally guided by Ari, where both the functionality of the new car and the driver's driving style are reviewed. After a couple of years, it's time for driving training in circuit, where you can practice especially different dodging situations and slippery driving in safe conditions.

The cooperation with Excelsior, which began at the beginning of 2021, has been smooth and seamless. The administration side is also handled wonderfully thanks to a common monitoring list, which Excelsior keeps an eye on and proactively reminds you to sign up for training. The trainings led by Ari offer rigorous subject matter and practical training mixed with humor. The participants have even compared track driving training to a work well-being day! And of course the trainings are conducted in Finnish as well as in English.

Since 2011, Neste has offered company car drivers the opportunity to participate in one of the three alternative driving training modules offered by Excelsior every time the company car changes. In addition, all Finnish personnel have had the opportunity to participate in Excelcior's theory lectures.

From the beginning of 2016, our cooperation has expanded to driving track and theory training intended for all motorists. This training is carried out in small groups on the Vantaa driving range either with the driver's own car or with a car borrowed through Excelsior.

"Here is a positive safety observation feedback from our employee who participated in the safe driving training conducted by you.

The person had been driving with the cruise control on at a speed of 80 km/h on the main road, when another vehicle came unexpectedly into his forward behind the mandatory stop sign. The situation came unexpectedly. According to the person, thanks to quick reaction and slippery weather driving training organized by the employer, he was able to reflexively dodge the car in such a way that personal injuries were avoided in the crash.

Finally, in his feedback, the person states: "Driving exercises in slippery weather fulfilled their purpose in this near-miss situation. Avoidance of an obstacle was repeated and practiced in the training with the aim of looking for an empty space suitable for avoidance instead of staring at the obstacle. I recommend continuing to organize trainings and participating in them for everyone who drives to work."

"Since 2014, we have paid special attention to the driving training of Yara residents who drive a lot for work in building Yara's safety culture Safe by Choice - Consciously safe.

Our previous driving trainings were random and organized by the teams themselves.
